Hello valve cover says 1160 rebuilt by Cat. It is in a 1986 LNT 8000 ford. How can I tell if it is a 1160 or 3208. TIA

Looks like about the only potential quick way to tell is if it has an inline 8 plunger pump or a Caterpillar V8 design. Chances are if Cat rebuilt it, it may have a V8 pump. Only two other ways to tell, and that's measure the stroke, or examine the front cover if you know the differences.

1160 is basically the early 1100-series name for what became the 3208, same core block/head with differences mainly in the front cover and fuel system; quickest ID is the pump (early inline “straight-8” vs later Cat V-shaped sleeve-metering) and the engine serial plate on the block, where an 1160 often shows 95B-… while many Cat remans left with 3208-spec bits even if the valve cover still says 1160
