The construction company I worked for had an old Brockway with an 8V71 and 13 speed, I drove it a few times hauling equipment. Brings back memories!

That's a pretty popular video of that Brockway ride. AND, it's filmed in around Troy and Albany, NY in our area. I recognized a lot of the scenery. That was a real truck boy. I loved them. Not the roomiest cab if you are a big fella, but they felt good to drive.

They were Mack cabs, weren't they Lowboy?
They were their own cabs up until either 1975 or 1976 Steve, when Mack purchased the company for a short time, then shut it down. They switched to the "R" Model cabs, but kept the grills, fenders and such Brockway. I have a friend in Granville, NY that is a Brockway collector with many, many different models of them dating back from the '40's to the last ones built. Several have Detroit V-12's in them. He's got some pristine ones, some crusty ones, but they're a sight to see. There's all-wheel-drive ones, tractors, dump trucks...wreckers...what a nice collection. He likes people to come look at them too, so if anyone's interested, someday I can arrange that visit. It's about an hour northeast of Albany, NY. He built a brand new Morton building last year to keep the best ones out of the elements.

There's even a couple of slight variations in the R Model cabs he pointed out to me one day...some have an extra 4-5 inches of length behind the seat. Long-legged fellas like you appreciated those, LOL.

It sounds like that would be just a couple hours away from me. I'd like to do that one day, I'll keep you posted. I've got a lot of things to button up here before the snow flies to do first.

See you learn something new everyday. I did not know they used a R model cab for a short time.

When did Mack close the factory (maybe mid seventies?)

Cheers Martin

Yeah, I'm not sure of the exact year Martin, but I'm almost 100% sure the last Brockway was built in late 1976, or 1977 being the very last of them before they shut down. If I were home now (on laptop in truck, 110 miles away still,) I'd research that. The guy I am referring to with all the Brockways in upstate NY knows everything about them, from serial numbers to all kinds of statistics on them. He's a walking micro fiche for parts too.

Steve...when you're caught up and wanted to make that trip up to visit the Brockway collection, and you have anybody else that would want to ride along...I can call Clarence (owner) and make the arrangements to go see him and the whole deal any time you're ready to. I love stopping in there myself periodically to visit, and Clarence enjoys the company as well.

The very first time I ever met him was on a truck hunt in his area. We stumbled across his yard and stopped in unannounced, 3 of us dummies in an old junk Volvo 4 door car that only 3 doors opened. Clarence dropped what he was doing, we threw him into the back seat with me, and he brought us all over his area showing us different farms and locations where he had trucks stored before he put this new building up last year. I had to keep letting him out my door every time we stopped someplace, lol. He loved the time spent doing that as much as we did that day, great guy to be around. Saw him recently in Ballston Spa, NY at the ATHS antique truck show there with a beautiful late model Brockway with a 3406B Caterpillar, Mack cab series tractor.

According to Wikipedia, Mack bought the company in 1956 and folded it in '77. I remember seeing NY DOT trucks that were Brockway and Thruway trucks as well. That sounds like a nice field trip Lowboy, I'll keep you posted.

That's the right info. Clarence actually has a Brockway with the NY State Thruway decal still on the doors in his collection. It's dark blue, Mack cab...I think it's a 375 model if I recall. Hardly any miles on it too.

Just say the word, we'll plan a Saturday or Sunday trip to visit him.

I also drove the same configuration for a season,I commented on it on the other board,it had a three stage Jake on it,you could hear it for miles.I used to work all day on a dozer or whatever and come in to the yard after working all day and move the paver and rollers and whatever else needed to be moved to get the crews ready for another day. They would sometimes drive the grader over the road unless it was too far away.Ron G
