Hello. I am new here and new to a big truck. I have an international 4900 with an unladen weight of 21k. The gvwr is 26k. How much can I tow legally?

If your unladen weight is 21K (which seems high if it's a box truck or similar, have you scaled it?) And the vehicle GVWR is 26K, you are allowed to carry 5K of cargo as to not exceed the total 26K when scaled. If you are talking "TOW" as in a trailer attached that is a whole nother matter all together and we need more info.

It's a bucket truck. It's been weighed. I understand that I cannot exceed 26k on the truck, I don't understand what I can tow.

You need to find what your GCWR is. If its not on any of the data tags you may need to call your local dealer for the info. My guess is its probably not much over 36K which would leave you with about 10K to add to it.

Just in case there is any confusion, the GVWR is the GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (maximum allowed on the truck). The GCVWR is the GROSS COMBINED VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (maximum that this truck is rated to haul including a trailer).

If your hitch can handle it you can have up to 5000 pounds tongue weight to keep the truck legal. You'll probably have to go to an International dealer with your VIN to get exact specs. I did a little poking around on Google and it seems 26,000 GVW was a pretty rare truck.
