Locked up Series 60

This morning I got a frantic phone call to look at an early 90's Series 60 that wouldn't turn over, got the trusty breaker bar out and put it on the accessory drive... thing wont even rock. UH oh... Then I get the story. The clutch came apart and they called in a moonlighter to change it out (I was swamped at the time). He finished up around midnight last night. This morning their driver started the truck and backed it out of the shop and let it idle while he closed the door and loaded his stuff, he said he heard the engine start to labor then die. Now she's locked tight. 1.2 million miles on the bottom end, my thinking is pilot bearing didn't get seated right and now they have thrust bearing issues? The driver said it cranked a lot harder than normal, thought it was just low batteries.

Well that could be but it should take a little longer to wipe out the thrust bearings. IMO. I would slide a jack under the trans and loosen the bell bolts and see if it will bar over.
Then bar the crank back and forth to see how much end play there is. Does the clutch have any free play? if the adjuster wasn't locked in place the internal adjustment ring
will spin to the end and lock the clutch up. But there crap behind that pilot bearing when he installed it too.

One other, he obviously pulled it up with the bell bolts, Big mistake. Loading the clutch in the trans to install is the only way to go. Takes less time too.
You can ruin the thrust bearings by trying to run one with a broken input shaft {that broke on angle}. The broken front piece will move forward and
put load on the thrust bearing.

Well, at the moment I'm out of this. I will try to help them out but I'm up to my armpits in bean combines 'til the end of next week. Plenty of welding work there.

Up date to this thread... I got a chance to look at this one today. Backed off the trans bolts and moved it back a 1/2" and still no end play or rotation. So I pulled the pan and the number 6 main cap. Not good... The rear thrust is just glitter in the pan and the main is spun 180 degrees out of position and the crank thrust surface is junk. No telling how bad the block is.
So it got dragged outside to rest for a bit while the owner goes after the clutch guy. I don't see this ending well. I already have a good running takeout lined up for them. And hey... they already have a new clutch. :bangh

Yep, I'm just spectating at the moment but I have been authorized to pick up the take out engine and swap it when I have time. They aren't wanting the other guy to pull the clutch himself without documentation.

I think you need to take a gopro under there with you to document the damage.
The truck owner already has pics of the crank and thrust washer damage and intends to be there this week when I pull the engine and trans as a unit, then we remove the trans and clutch slowly and document everything. The gent in question will be there too, minus tools in hand.

Well we got it all out and on the concrete this morning, I pulled the trans and clutch and found the problem right off the bat. The guy didn't remove the snap ring from the pilot bearing... It should be flush in the flywheel, but with the snap ring in place it sits .225" proud of the flywheel, bent the hell out of the flywheel bolt scuff plate too.(it won't fit over the snap ring)
The best part of the deal is that the owner wants to spiff this unit up for another million miles, all new rubber mounts for everything, suspension bushings if needed, new silicone hoses on the engine, new fuel lines, And a good steaming and paint the frame inside and out. He really has a good solid truck so we might as well. And maybe even a bit of Chrome to please the drivers. Could end up to be the nicest '96 IH around.
Originally it was a Safeway tractor so... she's pretty plain Jane but after serving for 1.3 million miles they want to keep it going.

Sounds like you'll be busy for a while! I wonder how things will work out with the first mechanic?
Well... the first guy doesn't seem to answer his phone now. The truck owner has kinda sorta put the word out, and the moonlighting might have a bit of a crimp now. I wholeheartedly agree that a guy that cant devote his full attention to a job is not the guy you want to do the job.
