Saw a really nasty one today

It's not in a truck, but I got a call from a well driller today to look at a C-16 Cat industrial that lost oil pressure. The pan was off when I got there and full of... get this... Gear teeth and a chewed up 3/8"x1.25" bolt. They were worried about where the bolt came from :bangh. I said "from inside the engine". I think they have a problem child already, It came from the North Dakota oil fields, got a whole ten hours on it yesterday and today. In addition to this problem, it's leaking oil around the spacer plate... Not good.

Good chance the bolt was a fastener for the front structure. This engine sounds like it would make a core for a swing engine. By the time you do a
complete tear down and repair-time wise it will probably be cheaper to replace. It's not hard using cat parts to hit 20 to 24K rebuilding the gear train
and possibly a crank. One out of the box is probably 28K That head more than likely has some very small cracks also. How many hrs on it?

Had a B model to rebuild 14 years ago that the bull gear bushing went to hell and sawed through the front cover, That engine was tired and the owner
wanted it repaired. After having all six cut for shims, liner packs, head, nozzles, pump rebuilt and new advance, cam and followers plus most of the
gear train and used front cover he wished he had bought a Cat Reman. I tried to tell him.

This one is $52K as a reman, And I think they have junked this one. The amount of crap in the oil filter is astronomical. But they want to pull the front and fix it theirselves. More power to them. I see a big disaster.

It's out of my hands now... and I don't really want it their way. My motto is... This ain't Burger King... You take it my way, or you don't get it with any warrantee. :avid
And that's a good way to do it. With me It's take it some where else. I send at least 6 jobs away each year, maybe more.

I try hard not to be a jerk about that stuff, but you can only do so much if they want to cheap out. I once did the steering clutches in a Terex crawler, the owner supplied "good used parts" that were just barely above junk specs and swore they didn't use it enough to worry about it. Nine years later he was cussing me when it quit moving on one side. He got a copy of my work order with HIS signature regarding the used parts and my quote about "NO WARRANTEE for love nor money". He also got my Lawyers phone number with those papers.

Just last week I had a fellow get pissed because I would not sign off on a annual inspection for his trailer. Well it was junk and with any amount of work it would still be junk.
I won't hang my name on garbage like that. I don't care how upset they get it isn't worth it.

I won't do inspections anymore. Period. Two years ago I did one for a Mexican trucker... Thousands of dollars in chrome, but no maintenance. Brakes were junk, etc. Guy told me he would beat my azz if I didn't pass him. So I showed him the biz end of my 1911 Colt clone and told him get out. Turned out he wasn't even a legal citizen. How the hell do these guys get CDL's and License for their trucks?
