tans shaft 2.jpgtrans shaft.jpgI bought a 2005 185 Hino box truck. I only had it 1 week and the main shaft in the transmission broke. Damaged the input shaft and the output shaft. The output was repairable.
Anyone ever had this happen before? I'm wondering because Hino stocks all these parts and makes me wonder if it's a common problem?
It's not like it's a wimpy shaft it's pretty heavy duty. the one that broke looks like its been twisted and eventually broke.
Wasn't all that bad all said and done but a little frustrating, had to have it towed off the highway.

What kind of trans is it? I know with eaton sometimes they have casting issues with parts. Thats a pretty good twist

It's a Hino gearbox, not sure who makes them for Hino, I had heard Eaton but not sure.
It is quite a twist, makes me wonder about the guy that drove it before I bought it. Thing is it was the cleanest truck I looked at, wasn't beat up or all scratched and dented like most city trucks.
Dealer said it could have been defective right from the start but took 8 years to break.

Hi Geoff,
It is a 5 speed gearbox, the truck was empty.4.7 litre 289cu inch. 175 hp.
I only had the truck a week when it broke. We don't carry heavy loads. Who knows what they carried before I bought it.
Turns out it has been the best truck I have owned. Good on fuel, turns on a dime and haven't had any trouble since.
The only thing I would change would be to go to a six speed gearbox.

Do you mind if I ask a few things generally about your truck?I live in New Zealand and I guess you must be in Canada?I have seen pictures of the Hino's in Canada
even thou they look different from the models that come down this way they still have pretty much the same engines and drive trains.
Your engine down here is called the JO5D being 4.7 litre,4 cylinder and 112mm by 120mm bore/stroke,
If you don't mind conversing with me and everyone else who might read this we could share some valuable information,

Sure, I always like talking about trucks. I'm not a mechanic, but have been around trucks my entire life.
Do you run a freight delivery business ? My friend is from Australia , not really close to New Zealand but close compared to Canada
. For me it's the perfect truck. It has an 18' box and is 102" inside height . I like the extra height because we build custom millwork for commercial and institutional projects. It has a hydraulic lift gate which is handy and also a pull out ramp.
I do find it is a little underpowered. My shop is near the Niagara Escarpment , it's not a steep hill but it slows right down to about 70km an hour on a 100km an hour road.

Hey Martin,
This is great,knowledge sharing from opposite sides of the world and more importantly about trucks!! They never bring long nosed Hino's down this part of the world,only flat nosed one's not sure why.
I started a freight company here 7 years ago,I mainly freight the tyres from all the tyre companies in Auckland and deliver to all the towns up to 5 hours drive in all directions.
We have tuff emission standards on our vehicles here and The last Hino I bought just 5 months ago is called "euro 5" which means the engine has EGR ( exhaust gas recirculation ) and a DPF ( capture the soot and burn it off ).
This latest Hino is Badged 1022 for identification purposes with a 5 cylinder 6.4 litre engine ( 112mm by 130mm ) with common rail,EGR and a DPF,this engine is called JO7E ( VRG turbo and intercooled ).
The hino I bought in 2007 is badged 1017 with a 5.3 litre 4 cylinder engine ( 112mm by 130mm ) with just injector pump and turboed and intercooled and only euro 3 emission standard and no EGR or DPF.
The 1017 will leave the 1022 for dead on hills,funny that don't you think?
All that emission gear has killed a good engine in my mind.
Can you see any emission gear on your engine?
If you like tinkering with your engine I have proved lots of tips that do improve performance.

Hi Geoff,
That's a fine looking truck!
. We have way more flat nose Hino trucks ,than the conventional model hino.I think the flat nose starts with 155 model and goes up to 195 with a GVWR 19500 pounds. The conventional goes up to 358 which has a GVWB 38500 pounds.
our emission standards are pretty strict too. I am not sure but the DPF engines started to be mandatory around 2007-2009
.It's funny how emissions can suck the life out of an engine. Is your newer truck better on fuel?
My truck passes emissions with flying colours. I had it idling the other day to warm up because of the cold. It never even turned the snow dirty. My old chev would have been black for a 1 meter circle.
Do you have to fill a log book every day. We only need to fill a log when we travel more than a hundred and sixty km radius. I fill a daily checklist for safety.

Hi Martin,
There are tough logbook requirements here,only if you are going to being "locals" operating within a 50km radius from your base can you avoid filling out one.
What size tyres are on yours?I bought a 2010 ISUZU FRD500 model which was euro4, EGR and DPF,5.2 litre common rail and I got installed in it a hard wired "KW SYSTEMS" chip
from germany which basically is hard wired into the injectors and doesn't upset the computer at all.
This chip totally transformed the engine,heaps more low range torque and made a 10% reduction on the fuel bill at the same time.
What intervals do you have the engine oil changed at?

Hi Martin,
Both of my Hino's actually are doing the same fuel economy which is 5km/litre and the ISUZU before the chip only did 4.5 km/litre at best but after chipping does 5.5 km/litre.

My tires are 225-75R-19.5". Sounds like you have your truck dialed right in with the KW systems chip. I am not overly concerned with fuel mileage yet. We dont put very many miles on as we only use it for delivering projects when they are complete. I have been getting 13.8 liters per hundred kilometers. Not sure what fuel costs in New Zealand ? We are paying $1.30-$1.43 per liter for diesel.
I looked at a couple of Isuzu trucks before I bought this one. They were city trucks and were pretty banged up. I am still partial to the American truck style like the peterbilts and Kenworth and International trucks, but for what I need the hino works perfect.

Hi Geoff,
They are six bolt steel. No retreads.
I would like to have the air deflector on your truck. Mine catches quite a bit of air.

Was your box custom made, with the side doors? Does it have a roll up door on the back, or barn doors? I think the curb side doors would be handy. Silly question. Do you guys drive on the right in New Zealand ?

Going pretty well here. Been away to the Dominican Republic for holidays. Back to the grind now.
Have had a couple issues with the truck. Thought it was injector pump problems. Couldn't get it over 40 kph. Pulled the fuel tank, and cleaned. Still did it. Changed the suction valve on the pump. Worked good for a couple days. It didn't have any codes or lights come on. So I was stumped. Ended up changing the mass air flow sensor. That was the problem. Works perfectly now. Been getting 16 miles per gallon maybe a little better. I don't really keep track. I just put fuel in it when it needs it.

I don't have a FD but I do have a few other Hinos.
To the best of my knowledge, your truck should have the H07D motor at 180hp.
