well, actually I had 2 broken axles when I pulled it down, was dumping the load and it would not move, the air brakes on the rear were locked.
I was in the truck, rocking it, and it popped, broke an axle, when I pulled the axles both were broken. unbelievable, I have driven a few trucks tractors and dozers in my life, and when I say I rocked it, just barely. how in the blue blazes can you break an axel in a spicer 2speed split. it has 5.17 gears and 5speed with 7.3.
I just bought this truck form the army Vietnam museum, only has 45k miles on it, and the forestry service was the last to use it.
think it could have had a broken axle before I got it and it still pulled the truck?, I only made 1 load.
I do not know at this time if it is an open rear end or some kind of positrack.
any info would be helpful, of course spicer tells me my axles are used only on this model truck, "special use" or something, prolly ordered to army spec.

I broke an axle once pulling away from a red light in an empty truck. Same conditions, I wasn't hot rodding the truck at all. Truck wouldn't move and when I looked out the back window I saw the driveshaft spinning. I was returning from a freight run with a full trailer load I had delivered. Go figure.

I pulled the pumpkin. Passenger side had been broken for a while. The spicer is a spool type ring/pinion. Now. What weight fear oil and how much does this rear end hold?

In your climate you could probably use 90/140 without any trouble. I bet you'd use most of a 5 gallon pail.

ok, replaced both axles, drove the chunk of crap and no high in the 2 speed, pulled the pumpkin again, the 2speed was full of metal chips from the axle, the hollow shaft the has the gears on it the one that attaches to the shift fork is split, cracked from end to end, what a hunk of crap this truck has been. no idea what this is going to cost, cant find anyplace to get used parts. makes me sick everytime I look at this sorry excuse for a dumptruck

this has been a very frustrating and extremely steep learning curve. I have spent the past few days researching the black hole that is the parts world for these rear ends. I finally got ahold of a guy at spicer, he lead me to the online manual for this unit, sticker shock on the parts forced me to search farther.
finditparts a wonderful place, so far they have had the Sun gear for the 2spd,about 40% cheaper than anyone else and they have the planet gear shafts as well, for almost half the price.
I may survive this beating after all.
I think a place within the forum for parts scrounging would be a big help.
