Comp. pay

Saw in the news resently about a driver that was holding a load of frozen chicken ransom for his compensation pay. The story wasn't to clear on the details but he abandoned the load at a truck stop in Utah. The reefer ran out of fuel and the chickens thawed and after a couple weeks juices started running out with a wonderful smell.
Any way I was wondering, ( I'm not a OTR driver ) how bad is it out there to get your comp pay, ( fuel, tolls, etc. ) from the dispatchers. The news said he didn't have enough money to make it to Wash. St. I've heard theirs a shortage of drivers because of the shale drilling. Was this guy goofy or is there a problem with getting paid ?

I lean toward most OTR drivers are goofy, but ten years ago I delivered a load to Harrisburg,Pa they pulled their load off and in the nose of the trailer was pallet of canned beans my next load was going to have the refer set at minus ten so I couldn't have that in the trailer. I sat for two and a half days waiting for instruction regarding the pallet, no luck and the shipper was getting mad so all I could say was pull it off and put it on your dock. Six months later I was on my last run with them, I found my account was locked called the company they said they were looking into it, two weeks after I quit it was $1600 they kept from me for that pallet. One thing I saw with two companies I drove for was that they had no instructions on how to operate a refer. A lot of loads were lost because of wrong temp setting or ran out of fuel. Two months out at a time and your lucky to take home $500 a week.

I was working outside of Missoula last fall and remember that a refer full of chicken was left at the truck stop there. Perhaps it is the same one. I never did hear why it was left but I understand they found the guy in the Boise area a week or so later.
