Electronic Log Book

I have heard recently that the FMCSA is considering requireing electronic log books (GPS ?) for hours of service record keeping.

I don't run over the road anymore, and have a lowboy to haul my equipment to job sites. I do work in a three state vicinity and occasionally must run a log book, but rarely. I usually put less than 20,000 miles a year on our lowboy.

Do you suppose that they would require outfits such as mine to invest in an electric log book system?

The whole hours of service thing has pissed me off ever since I first started over the road in the mid 80's, and it continues to get worse. I appreciate the safety concerns, but forcing a person to take a long break when he or she isn't tired and then having to drive when he/she is in order to get the most out of the log book is assinine and counter productive in regard to safety in my opinion.

I'm curious to hear some of the answers, electronic logs were just starting to be introduced when I was laid off from driving in '96.

I expected more comments Steve. I guess it is not as much of a concern as I anticipated.

UPDATE:

While I don't believe it has been decided as of yet, I have heard that the electronic logs will only apply to those who spend a minimum of 8 days in a 30 day period under conditions that now require running a log book.
