Who Else Has Been Stuck ??

I mean I can't be the only one . This 1st few pics are from a job that I had been on for two days . I was trucking away concrete batch plant parts . Temps were in the high 90s for weeks ahead of this job . I had been all over this job . Then I found this sweet little spot :)

If you haven't been stuck like that or a lot worse you haven't been working hard enough.

I've been struck a lot worse then that (like cant see the back tires) but never had a camera or presents of mind to take a picture.

I've been stuck plenty in all manner of trucks and cranes. But bar none, my fav, and wish I had a pic of it, back in the mid 90's was on a new 4 lane hwy project in N KY in Cincinnati area. Dead of winter, subgrade of hwy was cold frozen, have been taking "shortcut" across subgrade for days in my '89 Ford F-350 4wd mechanics body truck. Well, it had warmed up over a weekend. Come monday, came in the back road to the drill rig which was a solid road. About mid day, need some diesel fuel. Told helper to "take the truck and fill the diesel tank" in the back of the truck. He asked "which way do you want me to go?" Puzzled by the question, I replied "across the short cut of course". The thing is, he was thinking, and I wasn't. He asked for confirmation, "are you sure?" Nearing irritation, as in why in the hell is he asking me this, "just take the damn truck across the road and get some fuel!" His grinning reply was "Ok". I was totally puzzled at this point, but shook it off and went back to drilling. He walked back down the slope in mear minutes. I asked "what's the problem?". "I'm stuck!". "Whaddya mean your stuck?" I walked up the hill, and then it dawned on me, the warm temps had thawed our shortcut. Marvin, being the devious comedian he was, knew this, hence the previous questions. Once he obtained my blessing to take the short cut, he put that old Ford in gear and stood on the hammer, drove until it sunk to the point that the mechanics body was sitting on the ground and then some. Front bumper and rear step bumper on the ground, wheels all but disappeared. I have never seen a work truck this stuck! But I couldn't be mad, not when I thought back how all this had transpired. I could only envision Marvin let out a Yee Haa as he took off in that truck, and then mashing the pedal when he grabbed second, or third given the distance he plowed through the muck. All I could do was laugh.

I too have never had the presence of mind to photo my truck stuck, usually too busy trying to get un-stuck...

Last time I was coming out of the woods on a greasy road (mid January) when things started to gently slide towards the bank, I gently started to turn towards the ditch since the next flat spot below the bank was about 800 feet. I got it pointed towards the bank, tried to straighten it out and the crown, (who ever heard of a crown on a 14-foot logging road) gave me the option of bank or ditch. Well ditch it was. Walked a mile back up the hill to the shovel, he came down with the shovel and a chainsaw to clear out the brush I had plowed through. We hooked onto the trailer and he started to drag me out and back up the ditch. That was working well until the load started to slip on the trailer bunk. At which point we pulled the wrappers and he unloaded the truck. Then separating the truck and trailer, he set the trailer up hill and drug me out. I only cleaned off a turn signal.

We put everything back together, reloaded the truck and off I went. Only one load that day instead of three. A cat showed up the next day, flattened out the crown and slathered some inch and a half rock over the area. Just another day in rainy Washington...

It's nice that you were able to hook onto your own bumper and lift yourself out though... ;)
 
I thought getting stuck was part of the job description when it comes to getting your truck into jobsites. I used to get mad, but I think I have learned that it is easier to get someone there to get you out instead of trying for 1/2hr. to get out & break something.

I'll never forget when I was about 20 years old and I got a loaded L9000 stuck while backing in on a lot. I really thought my jacked up 4WD truck would pull it out. I even chained it up and tried. Shows how little I knew. Not even a budge, luckily I didn't tear my truck up that day.

This is the only time I've got the L9000 stuck. The driveway broke and swallowed the front tire and I had just dumped the dirt out. I had pinned myself to the wall here. Had blisters for weeks after shoveling 20,000 lbs. of dirt out of my way by hand.

To those of you who have driven a concrete mixer and reading this post with a big smile thinking "if you only knew"and not commenting because negotiating those top heavy mixers with a full load around a new excavation is just a way of life for us and you are always learning something that you didn't know the day before.When the mixer drum is turning the CG of the truck is constantly changing and you learn before too long that stopping the drum from turning increases your chances of putting the truck where you want it to go.The crews on the job site generally know your limitations and might suggest that you "lighten up" in an easy spot first before you try to get in the tough spots and they also know which driver to "grab" out of the lineup of trucks when they have a tough spot to get into.I would always suggest when hiring a driver to get one with "mixer" experience if you have a choice.I never rolled a mixer but have had many opportunities over the years but I cannot count the number of times that I have been stuck in the twelve years or so history under my belt.Ron G
